Duterte names new Marina Chief

Manila, Philippines - Armed Forces chief of staff Rey Leonardo Guerrero has been announced as the next Chief of the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte himself.

Guerrero holds the rank of four-star general in the Philippine Army. He is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Ma¬harlika Class of 1984. He was set to retire last year, but his term as AFP Chief of Staff was extended by four months. He is set to take over the Marina post in April.

If his appointment pushes through, Guerrero will become the latest addition to the growing list of former military men that Duterte has appointed to various government posts.

Guerrero will be replac¬ing Marcial Amaro III, who was fired by the president on the ba¬sis of “excessive travels”. Ama¬ro made 24 foreign trips within roughly a year and a half in office.
